PROJECT 1

CREATIVE APPROACH - ASSESSING DAYLIGHT & THERMAL COMFORT AT MODERN HOUSES

The most common issues faced in modern houses nowadays are lack of allowance for daylight whereby the need of artificial lighting is a necessity at all spaces of a house. Additionally, the state of thermal comfort can only be felt comfort with the support of mechanical devices such as fans and air conditioners. Due to this scenario, users may need to pay more for their utilities. The implementation of passive design into modern houses may be the best solution to address the issues faced regarding daylight distribution and thermal comfort at modern houses. Technically, passive design does not require mechanical heating or cooling and artificial lighting. Generally, buildings that are passively designed will take advantage of the natural climate to maintain thermal comfort. By incorporating passive design approaches into buildings, it may offer comfort, energy efficient, reduces greenhouse emissions from heating, cooling, mechanical ventilation, and lighting, and can save money.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS ASSIGNMENT:

• To identify issues related to daylighting and thermal comfort at double storey terraced / semi-detached houses.

• To assess the current condition of daylight distribution and thermal comfort at double storey terraced / semi-detached houses.

• To formulate ideas in addressing issues on daylight and thermal comfort at double storey terraced / semi-detached houses by incorporating passive design approaches.

This project is a group project and each group is required to formulate creative ideas on how to maximize daylight and thermal comfort for their chosen modern house that can be either a double storey corner lot or a double storey semi-detached house. We have to come out with an A1 Poster. The modern house that my group has chosen is the DOUBLE STOREY HOUSE at JALAN PJS 9/1H,  PETALING JAYA. The fieldwork of this case study will include data collection, observation and ideas to improve the current condition of daylight distribution and thermal comfort.
